Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Broadway, Lyric Theatre, 2018) | Playbill

We all know and hopefully love the Harry Potter books; I know I certainly do. It tends to be a common theme when you begin on the adventure of this 7 books series the topic of movie, or book first. I personally think book first because I think that background information is important and helps me understand the context of the movies more. But the less common topic in the world of wizards is the Script of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child or the Broadway show.

I was lucky enough to have had the chance to go see the show during a trip last September and was complete blown out of the water how fantastic it was. At the time I hadn't read the script and all the stage directions that were in the book version, but to see something so lively on stage, I couldn't wait to find out how it was described.

As I started to read, I was able to see the characters that I had seen on stage so clearly in my head as they portrayed in the book. Reading it really stretched me creatively to think of my over perspectives of these people and how I thought they should act and talk now as adult instead of foolish kids that they once were.  There were certainly parts of the book that I don't think would have made much sense to me if I hadn't already seen, they do a lot of "time turning" and changing on the time and story and it’s easy to forget what the current plot is if you aren't continuously reading it.

After seeing people float in the air and who knows what coming out of their wand on stage, I truly was pleased with how the author described it, but it also made me appreciate it as a script and as someone who enjoys acting. Allowing an actor to have creative freedom with a character is what truly allows that person to come alive on stage in my opinion. I think I would have preferred to read the script before seeing the show to be able to appreciate the excitement of the creativity that was brought along with making it.

  1. Hi Cecilia! I remember you mentioning that play last year. Your description of it here makes me want to go see it! As someone who was a big fan of Harry Potter, I've never read the Cursed Child, and this piqued my interest. Thanks for the recommendation!

  2. I was a big fan of the Harry potter books and heard about "The Cursed Child" but never ended up reading it. It is always interesting to read a book after seeing a play or movie, especially elaborate ones like broadway shows.

  3. I have only read the first Harry Potter book but I have watched all the movies. I never knew there was also a play (how exactly are all the special effects done??). Thank you for enlightening me on the theatre kid world of Harry Potter. Very well written review Cecilia!!

    1. Hey Leo! Thank you for the comment! There is a cursed child book that you should read if you enjoyed the series. There were many special effects but some of my favorites were "fire" coming out of the wands and the actors looking like they are going into spaces (like a lock) that were not big enough for them.

  4. After reading the original series, I tried to read the cursed child but never ended up liking it. It may have been because I didn't see the play and didn't have much context so I think it might be interesting to see the play one time.
