Jumanji by Chris Van Alsburg - Elliot

I remember reading this back when I was a kid and if I'm being honest I don't really know how I felt about it because on the other hand. I feel like in the past I saw it as boring but on the other I may have found it entertaining. But as of now I see it in a more positive light and I can kind of see why it became famous with many films (which I never watched by the way).

The story begins with 2 children who were left home alone by their parents, Peter and Judy. They soon grew bored and Peter found a board game outside and brought it back which was called Jumanji, they soon began to play but realized that this game was much more crazier than they thought as dangerous animals, plants and even natural disasters actually turn to real life and start rampaging across the house. After seeing this chaos the children find out that the only way to be able to turn things to normal is to beat the game which is what they did and things turn back to normal.

Now as I look back at the book from when I was a child I honestly thought that it was pretty memorable to me as I never really thought I would remember the story since it was as long as a chapter book but I actually liked it, it's just so interesting because you won't know what would happen next, there could be monkeys just destroying the kitchen to a fly biting one of the characters and making him ill. It also reminded me of an episode that I watched that was about stuff from a board game coming to life, I really liked that episode, and now that I see it it's pretty similar to Jumanji. I also liked how the book had these really nice detailed drawings that helped illustrate what was going on to give us a better feel about it and make it feel much more real. I really recommend that people read this book, its classic for me and it has creative storytelling, its also not too long of a book.

  1. I loved watching the film adaptation of Jumanji, and I had no idea that it was based on a book. Thanks for this insightful analysis of the book!

  2. I also had no idea Jumanji was based off of a book! I've seen the movies and your detailed descriptions of the eventful plot reminded me of how intense it was. It was so stressful that I don't think I'd ever watch the first movie again, but maybe reading the book instead will provide the same entertainment with a bit less...anxiety. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Elliot, I too did not know that it was based on the book, and I think you gave a book review.
